The Art of Ancient Egypt in Russia:
Museums, Collectors and the Preservation.
A lecture by Victor V. Solkin (Moscow)
Some collections of Ancient Egyptian art in Russian museums are known to contain real treasures -- these were purchased in Egypt by the early travelers and the first Russian Egyptologists of the XIXth Century. Many unique items from the State Hermitage (St.Petersburg) and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow) are on exhibit, but the most of these collections are virtually unknown, even among professional circles outside Russia.
In many cases, Ancient Egyptian treasures are being held at local museums in provincial cities accross Russia. Obviously then, many objects of international importance are still being kept outside the field of Egyptology.
This lecture will cover all these topics, and tell the story of the restoration of the colossal sphinxes of Amenhotep III from Kom el-Hettan, which since 1832 have stood on the banks of the Neva River in Russia.
See you there!
