Written by Michael Button on August 27, 2013 · In recent weeks, Egypt has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. However, hidden amongst the understandably negative coverage, what caught our eyes at Cause4 this week was a recent Guardian article highlighting the potential of social enterprise to make a difference, even in countries seemingly overrun by conflict. Whilst both insightful and informative, the piece begs the question as to how much of a difference social entrepreneurship can have on its own. If one considers the Egyptian organisation Nahdet el Mahrousa , the answer at first seems to be: a significant one... Read More

"Perhaps one of the most pressing issues when it comes to sustainability is energy production. Currently dominated by fossil fuels that are fast diminishing and highly polluting, governments and policy makers around the world have realized that the future of energy definitely lies in renewable resources. The symptoms of Egypt’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels as its main source of energy are starting to surface and are being felt nation-wide. On the operational level, production is falling short of demand causing long queues at gas stations, power cuts are rampant nationwide in the winter as much as in the summer and fuel shortages — especially in diesel oil — have crippled industrial production... “My southerners, my southerners,” sang Egyptian musician Dina El Wedidi during the closing set of The Nile Project 's concert in Al Azhar Park Thursday evening. The song — an ode to her southern neighbors along the Nile basin — kicked off with fellow Egyptian Hazem Shaheen hypnotically plucking his oud in the traditional Arabic maqam scale. Within moments, they were joined by a riveting onset of percussions spreading from Nubian riqq players to tablah players from Sudan. The song culminated with a magnificent saxophone solo by Ethiopian musician Jorga Mesfin — his ability to play off the percussions caused an energy-filled, uproar of rhythmic clapping and dancing from the audience...
